Dropnook

Free & open source · self-hosted

Instant sharing for your home network

Like AirDrop, but for every device and every system. Open one web page at home, drop in text, files or a screenshot — and it is on every other device at once. No app, no login, no cloud.

Runs on your own server · AGPL-3.0 · 17 languages

Dropnook in pictures: text fields and files, sharing to the internet, what is public, the recipient's page, the phone and other languages

Everything in one place at home

Live on every device

Phone, laptop, PC — Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone. Whatever one device drops in, all others see at once.

Text fields

For the Wi-Fi password, a link, an address. Word and link counts — and nothing is lost when the connection drops.

Files of any size

Drag them in or pick them. Uploads resume after an interruption, and everyone sees the progress.

Screenshots with Ctrl+V

Paste a screenshot straight from the clipboard. On the other computer, one click puts it back into the clipboard.

Share links that expire

Need it outside the house? One file or text through a link that ends by itself — with a password if you like.

17 languages, light and dark

Follows the browser's language and the system's theme — or switch by hand.

Light or dark — as you like

Drop follows your system’s appearance, or switches with one click — each browser remembers its choice. Drag the slider to compare.

Two containers, one clear boundary

drop holds your files and texts and is reachable only in your network. drop-share serves the share links to the internet — and sees nothing but what you shared. Your reverse proxy and your certificates stay yours.

Devices in your network reach drop directly. From the internet, requests go through your reverse proxy to drop-share, which reads only the shares folder; drop refuses anything that comes through a proxy.

Private by design

  • Drop stays in your network. Drop itself refuses anything that comes through a proxy — even a misconfigured one. Only drop-share faces the internet, and all it can see is what you shared.
  • A locked-down public part. No root, a read-only file system, no Linux capabilities. At worst it could show what is shared anyway.
  • Tested before every release. Each image has to survive an automatic set of attacks before it is published — and is rebuilt every week for security updates.
  • Open source. AGPL-3.0 — every line is on GitHub. No account, no telemetry, nothing phones home.

Up and running in minutes

  1. Create a share

On Unraid, add a share named “drop”. Your files and texts live there.

  2. Add the stack

In Compose Manager Plus, add a stack, paste the compose.yaml and fill in two free IP addresses.

  3. Compose Up

Open drop.yourdomain.com — on every device in your network.

Not on Unraid? Dropnook runs on any Linux host with Docker Compose.

Questions

Does anything go to a cloud?

No. Everything stays on your server. Only what you share as a link can be reached from outside — and only by whoever has that link.

Is it free?

Yes — free and open source under the AGPL-3.0. No account, no subscription, no telemetry. If it is useful to you, you can say thanks with a donation via PayPal — ideally 5 € or more, since PayPal keeps a fixed fee of every payment.

Do my devices need an app?

No. Any current browser is enough — on phones, tablets and computers alike.

Do I need Unraid?

Dropnook is made for Unraid, and the guide is for Unraid. It runs on any Linux host with Docker Compose, too.

And when I am away from home?

Through your VPN, Dropnook works just like at home. Without it, only the share links you create can be opened.
